Under the rules, the highest-placed eligible team from each of the four continents—Africa, Asia, Europe, and Oceania—earned an automatic Olympic quota.
Despite a heartbreaking exit in the group stages following a loss to Australia, Harmanpreet Kaur’s squad had a reason to celebrate. The Ranking Route: Four direct Olympic berths will be awarded to the highest-ranked eligible teams from Africa, Asia, Europe, and Oceania based on the ICC Men’s T20I Team Rankings as of December 31, 2026.
The Objective: To secure an automatic spot, India must finish as Asia’s top-ranked eligible side by the end of the year.
The Fallback Plan: If they miss out on the top continental ranking, they will have a second chance through the 2027 ICC Olympics Qualifier—an eight-team tournament that will determine the sixth and final team to enter the LA28 Games.
The LA28 Cricket Format
Cricket’s Olympic comeback will be fast-paced and highly exclusive. The LA28 Games will feature a six-team men’s tournament and a six-team women’s tournament, both played in the dynamic T20 format.
