How the Women in Blue Qualified

The pathway to the LA28 Olympics was confirmed recently by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the International Cricket Council (ICC). For the women’s event, the ongoing 2026 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in England served as the primary qualification stage.

Under the rules, the highest-placed eligible team from each of the four continents—Africa, Asia, Europe, and Oceania—earned an automatic Olympic quota.

Despite a heartbreaking exit in the group stages following a loss to Australia, Harmanpreet Kaur’s squad had a reason to celebrate. India finished third in their group, tying on points with Sri Lanka but advancing past them on a superior Net Run Rate (NRR). By finishing ahead of Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and Pakistan, India emerged as the best-placed Asian side in the tournament, granting them the continent’s sole automatic Olympic berth.

India joins three other heavyweights who have also secured their spots via the T20 World Cup:

  • Australia (Oceania)

  • Great Britain (Europe, via England)

  • South Africa (Africa)

What About the Indian Men’s Team?

While the women are packing their bags for Los Angeles, the Indian men’s cricket team has not yet qualified. Their qualification pathway relies on rankings rather than a specific tournament performance.

Here is what the men’s squad needs to do to join the women in LA28:

  • The Ranking Route: Four direct Olympic berths will be awarded to the highest-ranked eligible teams from Africa, Asia, Europe, and Oceania based on the ICC Men’s T20I Team Rankings as of December 31, 2026.

  • The Objective: To secure an automatic spot, India must finish as Asia’s top-ranked eligible side by the end of the year.

  • The Fallback Plan: If they miss out on the top continental ranking, they will have a second chance through the 2027 ICC Olympics Qualifier—an eight-team tournament that will determine the sixth and final team to enter the LA28 Games.

The LA28 Cricket Format

Cricket’s Olympic comeback will be fast-paced and highly exclusive. The LA28 Games will feature a six-team men’s tournament and a six-team women’s tournament, both played in the dynamic T20 format.
