ToggleIntroduction:
The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have suffered a major setback just as the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season gets underway. Legendary wicketkeeper-batter and former captain MS Dhoni has been ruled out of the tournament’s first two weeks after sustaining a calf strain during a practice session
The Injury and Official Statement
Speculation began when videos surfaced of the 44-year-old veteran appearing to struggle while walking during a training session at the MA Chidambaram Stadium. Despite unleashing some trademark massive hits in the nets earlier, the franchise opted to prioritize his long-term health.
The Chennai Super Kings management officially confirmed the news, stating: “MS Dhoni is currently undergoing rehabilitation for a calf strain. As a result, he is likely to miss the first two weeks of TATA IPL 2026. Get well soon, Thala!” Dhoni has stepped away from the team camp to undergo specialized rehabilitation, and medical staff have advised a minimum of 15 days of rest to ensure a full recovery
Matches Dhoni is Set to Miss
Due to the recovery timeline, Dhoni is expected to miss at least the first four crucial fixtures of CSK’s 2026 campaign:
March 30: vs. Rajasthan Royals (Guwahati)
April 3: vs. Punjab Kings
April 5: vs. Royal Challengers Bengaluru
April 11: vs. Delhi Capitals
Who Will Keep Wicket for CSK?
With Dhoni temporarily sidelined, all eyes are on how captain Ruturaj Gaikwad and head coach Stephen Fleming will adjust the playing XI. The most likely candidate to take over the gloves is Sanju Samson.
In one of the biggest trades ahead of the 2026 season, Samson was brought to Chennai from the Rajasthan Royals (in a swap involving Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran). Samson, who recently kept wickets for India during the T20 World Cup, brings immense experience and firepower. While CSK also has 27-year-old Urvil Patel in their ranks as a backup option, Samson is expected to step into the dual role of top-order batter and primary wicketkeeper for the initial matches.
Looking Ahead
Every IPL season brings renewed speculation about whether it will be MS Dhoni’s last. During a recent fan event, Dhoni candidly admitted that his fitness levels “are on the way down” due to age and lingering issues, including his previous knee surgeries. However, his impact on the field remains undeniable. Last season, batting lower in the order, he scored 196 runs at an impressive strike rate of over 135.
While the “Thala” faithful will have to wait a little longer to see him take the field in 2026, the focus now shifts to how a slightly revamped CSK squad handles the pressure in his physical absence.
