BCCI's Stricter New Guidelines for IPL 2026 |

Introduction:

With IPL 2026 kicking off on March 28, the BCCI has just dropped a comprehensive new set of operational rules that will fundamentally shift how franchises prepare, travel, and strategize. Whether you are tracking player form, analyzing pitch conditions, or finalizing your fantasy cricket combinations, these new guidelines are crucial to understand. The board is cracking down on match-day routines to ensure standardized conditions across all venues, and the changes are massive

The End of Match-Day Practice

The biggest headline is the absolute ban on match-day practice sessions. In an effort to preserve the quality of the pitch and the main square, the BCCI has mandated that no team can practice or conduct fitness tests on the playing surface on the day of the game.

  • Net Restrictions: Teams are now allotted exactly two nets in the practice area and one side wicket for range-hitting. Open nets are completely banned.

  • No Pitch Sharing: If one team finishes their net session early, the opposition is strictly prohibited from taking over those wickets.

  • Fantasy Impact: For those building their fantasy XIs, this means last-minute pitch assessments and late fitness tests are a thing of the past. Teams will have to finalize their playing XIs and impact players based on the previous day’s data, which could lead to fewer surprise inclusions

The Game-Changing “One Ball Change” Rule

This is a massive update that will directly impact the second innings. The BCCI has ruled that the team bowling second will now only be allowed to change the ball once during their fielding effort, regardless of how heavy the dew factor is.

  • The Catch: The bowling captain can only request this ball change after the 10th over has been completed.

  • Tactical Shift: Spinners might find it incredibly difficult to grip a wet ball in the first 10 overs of a night game. When selecting your fantasy bowlers, prioritize those who bowl in the death overs or are proven performers even when the ball resembles a bar of soap.

Stricter Travel and Access Protocols

The BCCI is enforcing severe restrictions on player movement and entourage access to maintain absolute focus on the game.

  • Team Bus Only: Players must travel to the stadium exclusively via the team bus (in up to two batches).

  • Family Separation: Family members and friends are no longer allowed to travel in team vehicles or enter the dressing room. They must arrive separately and are restricted to designated hospitality areas during practice and match days.

  • Support Staff Limits: Only 12 accredited support staff members, including the team doctor, are permitted in designated match-day areas

Broadcast and Presentation Discipline

The board is also cleaning up the visual presentation of the tournament, issuing strict directives for player attire and on-field behavior.

  • Cap Compliance: The Orange and Purple Cap holders must wear their respective caps while fielding. If they prefer their team cap, they are still mandated to wear the colored cap for at least the first two overs so the broadcast cameras can capture it.

  • Dress Code Enforcement: Floppy hats and sleeveless jerseys are entirely banned during post-match presentations. A first offense results in an official warning, while a second strike will hit the player with a financial penalty.

  • Protecting the LED Boards: Players have been officially instructed to stop hitting balls into the LED advertising boards during practice, and neither players nor support staff are allowed to sit in front of them during the match.
